DAM MANAGEMENT POLICY FOR NAMWATER (Namibia Water Corporation)

Client: NamWater
Location: Namibia
Completed: 2006
Capacity: 13 Dams in Namibia

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

NamWater owns 13 dams of significant size and a number of smaller dams in Namibia. As the owner and operator of the majority of dams in Namibia, NamWater is faced with legal responsibility to manage their dams in accordance with the new Water Resources Management Act.
In order to comply with this legal and social obligation, NamWater needed to develop a comprehensive dam management programme. This Guide to Best Practice is one component in that programme.
The aim of this Guide is to lay the foundation for the development of specific standard operating procedures and documents relevant to each dam that will aid in the sustainable management of the dam. This has been achieved by outlining the general requirements for best practice in the management and operation of dams and through the detailing of specific reports that should be prepared for each of NamWater’s dams. These include:

• Operation and Maintenance Manual
• Equipment Operation & Maintenance Manual
• Dam Safety Assessment Report
